Keep Your Dog Safe and Happy This Christmas!

The holiday season is a time for joy, family, and delicious treats—but for your furry friends, it can also bring some hidden dangers. To ensure your dog stays safe and healthy this Christmas, here’s a handy guide to festive foods and safety tips to keep in mind.

Holiday Foods to Avoid

Many popular holiday dishes can be harmful—or even toxic—for dogs. Here’s what to keep out of their reach:

🍫 Chocolate – Toxic to dogs! Symptoms include vomiting, restlessness, and an increased heart rate. Keep all types of chocolate securely stored away.

🍰 Christmas Cakes, Puddings & Mince Pies – Raisins, currants, and sultanas found in these treats can cause kidney failure, even in small amounts.

🧄 Onions, Shallots & Garlic – These ingredients can damage red blood cells, potentially leading to anemia. Avoid sharing meals that contain these.

🥩 Fatty & Processed Meats – High-fat scraps from roasts or BBQs can upset your dog’s stomach and lead to pancreatitis.

🥜 Macadamia Nuts – Extremely toxic to dogs. Symptoms may include wobbly legs, vomiting, and tremors.

🍷 Alcohol – Even small amounts can cause serious harm, so keep wine glasses and spills out of reach.

Holiday Hazards Beyond Food

It’s not just food you need to worry about. Dogs can accidentally ingest Christmas baubles, ribbons, or small toys left lying around. When opening presents, consider setting up a safe space for your dog with chews, snuffle mats, or Lickimats to keep them happily occupied.

If your dog eats something harmful, contact your vet immediately or the Animal Poisons Helpline at 1300 869 738. 🐾

Traveling with Your Dog Over the Holidays?

If you’re planning a holiday getaway with your pup, a little preparation goes a long way toward making it stress-free for everyone. Here are some top tips for a pet-friendly adventure:

1️⃣ Do Your Research

Look for pet-friendly accommodations, restaurants, and activities in your destination. Check pet policies and book ahead to avoid surprises. 🏨🐾

2️⃣ Prepare Your Pup

Ensure your dog is well-trained and comfortable with travel. Take a few short car rides beforehand and stay on top of vaccinations and flea/tick treatments—especially as ticks are prevalent this year! 🐕🦠

3️⃣ Pack the Essentials

Bring along food/water bowls, a leash, collar with ID tags, their bed, toys, and treats. New toys can also be a great way to keep them entertained during downtime. 🎾🍖

4️⃣ Plan Your Drive

Make frequent stops for bathroom breaks, water, and exercise. Use a travel crate, harness, or barrier for safety in the car, and never leave your dog unattended in a hot vehicle. 🚗🌞

5️⃣ Stick to a Routine

Try to maintain your dog’s usual feeding and walking schedule to help them feel more settled. Keep them on a leash in unfamiliar environments to reduce stress. 🕒🐕

6️⃣ Enjoy Activities Together

Explore pet-friendly hikes, beaches, or parks. Spending quality time with your dog creates wonderful memories and keeps them happy. 🌲🌊

7️⃣ Relax and Savour the Moment

A holiday with your dog by your side is extra special. Their joy will make your trip even more rewarding! 💖🐾
